Online Non-Profit University Offers Teacher Training Scholarships

An online non-profit university is offering 100 scholarships to current and future teachers and school leaders to further their learning. Western Governors University made the offer for people who want to earn their bachelor's or master's degree in education and aren't already enrolled there. The institution also said it would waive a $65 fee for candidates who used a special code ("NOWFREE") in the application process and applied before June 30.

The scholarships are for up to $2,000, $500 per term for up to four terms. Tuition for the program is currently a flat rate of $3,190 per six-month term. While the tuition doesn't include resource and program fees, it does cover digital course materials.

Those chosen to receive the funding must be officially admitted to the university and apply for the scholarship; selection will be based on academic achievement, financial need, readiness for online study and "current competency," among other criteria.

Currently, Teachers College has about 21,720 people enrolled in 30 different teaching programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. Students are pursuing licensure in every state of the country.

The school uses competency-based education, which enables students to pursue courses at a pace that fits their schedules. As soon as a given competency is mastered, he or she takes an assessment; once that's passed, the learner is free to move onto the next module. Each student is assigned a faculty program mentor for support. And study begins on the first of any month as soon as enrollment is completed.

The scholarship information is available on the university's website.
