PBS TeacherLine Science Courses Kick Off This Week

Online professional development provider PBS TeacherLine this week will roll out its new professional development courses in science, developed in collaboration with WGBH Teachers' Domain. The new research-based courses, aligned with state nd federal standards, will debut during PBS TeacherLine's summer session, which begins June 27.

The science courses are designed for K-12 educators and provide a number of media resources drawn from about 1,000 sources, including PBS science programs NOVA, ZOOM, and A Science Odyssey. According to PBS, "Courses in elementary and middle school science emphasize content, pedagogy and technology integration. Courses in high school science focus on inquiry methodology and technology integration."

In the coming year, 34 courses in various sciences will be offered in two formats: 30-hour, six-week courses and 45- to 60-hour, 10-week courses. Some of these include:

  • Fostering Collaboration, Inquiry, and Critical Thinking in Middle School Science;
  • "Teaching Elementary Life Science;"
  • "Teaching High School Biology;"
  • "Teaching Elementary Physical Science;" and
  • "Teaching Earth and Space Science for Grades 6-12"

"Our mission is to provide educators with innovative, high-quality online professional development in all subject areas and at all grade levels," said Rob Lippincott, senior vice president of education for PBS. "This collaboration with WBGH allows us to offer educators access to courses that will improve their science knowledge and teaching abilities at a time when districts are striving to meet teacher quality and accountability mandates."
