Dell Launches Education Data Management Service

Dell has launched a new predictive analytics-based decision support system, Education Data Management (EDM), which is intended to improve student outcomes and school efficiency.

EDM is designed to integrate data from multiple, disparate systems, so teachers and administrators can run reports on student performance and operational data. Because the system works on a district-wide level, it can track student performance over multiple years and across schools. According to information released by the company, EDM's predictive analytics can help parents and educators identify students' special needs, interests, and aptitudes, so they can use that information to improve student outcomes.

Several school districts across the United States have been using EDM as part of Dell's pilot program over the last year. Dell reported that Bridgeport School District in Ohio has used the technology to identify and address student performance weaknesses and that the district has increased its high school graduation rates from 82 percent to 100 percent, increased the number of its graduates attending college by 16 percent, and improved its district performance ratings significantly.

The system provides portal dashboards for students, teachers, administrators, and parents to access relevant information. It also supports district-wide operational planning and performance tools for human resources, finance, and facilities management.

Key features of Dell Education Data Management include:

  • Collection, storage, integration, and distribution of data across information systems, applications, and business processes;
  • Secure data repository for querying and reporting;
  • Role-based dashboards, scorecards, and reports; and
  • Self-service data portal to enable users to access and process data anywhere, anytime.

Further information about Education Data Management is available on the Dell site.

In related news, Microsoft has named Dell as Global Education Partner of the Year based on the company's commitment to building solutions for the education community.
