Second Step, Panorama Partner to Pair Social-Emotional Assessment, Curricula

Committee for Children and Panorama Education have partnered to integrate Panorama's social-emotional learning assessment with the Second Step program.

Second Step is Committee for Children's social-emotional learning program. With versions for early learning, elementary and middle school classrooms, the program features easy-to-implement lessons featuring games, songs and other activities. The preschool curriculum is designed to help students pay more attention, remember directions and control their own behavior. The elementary curriculum focuses on issues such as making friends, controlling one's emotions, problem solving and strategies for coping with peer pressure. The middle school program aims to build a connected culture among students and teachers.

Panorama offers assessment tools and reports that measure student competencies and student and teacher perceptions of topics related to social emotional learning along 22 different metrics, such as grit, growth mindset, engagement, perceptions of school safety, school climate and perceptions of student support resources.

As a result of the partnership, Panorama's assessment tools have been aligned with the Second Step program to help guide instruction, intervention and individual student supports.

"We have used the Second Step Program for several years in our district," said Becky Ballbach, director of student support services at Everett Public Schools, in a prepared statement. "As a result of our focus on social-emotional learning and supporting the whole child, we have reinforced our perspective and language from supporting 'all students' to supporting 'each student.' In order to understand the holistic needs and growth of each student, we are using Panorama Education to help us see where we are now on key social-emotional and relationship skill-development and to pinpoint what we need to do to support students in our schools."

"We are incredibly excited to partner with Panorama Education to give our schools and districts an understanding of how their students are doing across key social, emotional, and relationship skills, and to give districts information about which students may need additional supports," said Joan Cole Duffell, executive director of Committee for Children, in a prepared statement. "Through this partnership, we strive to help districts use actionable data paired with strong programs to help students grow and thrive."
