Ohio Districts Overhaul Infrastructure with Fiber WANs

Two K-12 districts in Ohio--Elyria City School District and Perrysburg Schools--are beefing up their bandwidth with new agreements to tap into high-speed fiber.

The districts both signed on with 10-year agreements with Unite Private Networks, which will provide a high-bandwidth fiber WAN to the schools. The company also provides fiber-based WAN services in 18 other states to schools, governmental organizations, and businesses.

Elyria City SD's implementation will help the district add new high-bandwidth services and

"We are excited about implementing UPN's leased private fiber solution because it allows us to increase bandwidth with no additional monthly charges. This will allow us to consolidate our data centers and continue to grow our network application offerings including voice and digital video distribution without fear of running out of bandwidth," said Brian Kokai, technology director at Elyria City SD, in a statement released this week.

Elyria City SD serves about 7,500 students in one high school, three junior highs, seven elementary schools, and three other learning centers.

Perrysburg Schools serves nearly 5,000 students in one high school, one junior high, and four elementary schools and has an annual operating budget of nearly $41 million.
