ABBYY Adds Document Searching, Editing to Scannx Document

Scannx will integrate ABBYY's FineReader Engine 10 Professional into the capture software for its Book ScanCenters.

ABBYY FineReader Engine 10 Professional is optical character recognition (OCR) software that converts scanned paper documents and PDFs, as well as digital photos, into documents and e-books that can be edited and searched. It recognizes multiple languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and German.

Scannx Capture software allows users to scan and save documents to digital file formats, including PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, PNG, JPEG, and TIF. It then lets the user send the document in a variety of ways, including by e-mail, fax or printer, smartphone or tablet, Google Docs, flash drive, or to network or FTP.

Scannx offers Book ScanCenters to library students and patrons.

"The book scanning center includes a 15-inch touchscreen computer preloaded with the Scannx and ABBYY software, and a patented (11" x 17") book-edge scanner to protect the spine of the book. The scanner's beveled edge enables students to scan to the edge of the book spine, producing clear and legible text in the center of the book," said said John Dexter, president and COO of Scannx.

The scan centers:

  • Allow users to lie books flat on the glass;
  • Provide simple instructions for users, including options to select document destination, color depth, file naming, scan quality, and file formats;
  • Allow library patrons to automatically orient, straighten, and crop each page; and
  • Work with ITC and Jamex debit card, coin systems, and major credit cards. They also support Pcounter, EnvisionWare, and Pharos.

Cost for the Scannx Book ScanCenter begins at $4,995 and includes one-year warranty. It can also be leased for less than $100 per month.
