2 Universities Recognized for Tech in Teacher Prep

Two universities, California State University, Fullerton and Lehigh University, have earned certification from a nonprofit organization for their emphasis on the use of technology in learning in their teacher preparation programs.

Each school was awarded the Seal of Alignment from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). "California State University, Fullerton, earned the Seal of Alignment for its educational technology master's program against the ISTE Standards for Coaches, and Lehigh University's College of Education in Bethlehem, PA received the recognition for its Technology Use in Schools graduate certificate program against the ISTE Standards for Teachers," according to a news release.

Cal State Fullerton's program is a 16-month master's program offered completely online for pre- or in-service teachers or technology coaches. It "offers a high quality, sequenced and interactive online learning experience," according to information released by ISTE. "Students who complete this program are exposed to both the theory and practice of using technology in student-centered ways and are prepared to become technology leaders and advocates. They determined that the program provides substantial opportunities for participating teachers to practice the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the ISTE Standards for Coaches."

Lehigh's graduate certificate comprises four courses and 12 credits. It is also available online and is designed for teachers within the United States and elsewhere. According to ISTE reviewers, the "program prepares teachers, administrators, and technologists to effectively integrate technology to meet the classroom learning needs in both United States and international schools through the application of theory and practice. Reviewers determined that this resource provides substantial opportunities for participating teachers to practice the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the ISTE Standards for Teachers."

"California State University, Fullerton, and Lehigh University are illustrative of the growing number of colleges and universities that are increasing their focus on ensuring that today's educators are prepared to integrate technology into learning and teaching in meaningful ways that improve student outcomes," said Carolyn Sykora, senior director of the ISTE Standards Program, in a prepared statement. "We are proud to award the Seal of Alignment to both universities for programs that allow educators to practice the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the ISTE Standards."
