SAT Practice, Current Events Discussions Offered Online
In partnership with Kaplan, the New York Times Learning Network has launched an SAT Question of the Day feature on its New York Times Learning Network site. The free site offers teachers, parents and students daily interactive resources based on the content of The New York Times. The SAT Question of the Day provides high school students with daily practice questions from www.kaptest.com, Kaplan's SAT preparation Web site. The feature introduces an analogy or sentence completion question that uses The New York Times Learning Network's Word of the Day in either the question or the answer choice. After a student selects an answer, an explanation appears as to why it is correct or incorrect. Students can also access strategies for answering similar types of questions that appear in the SAT verbal section.
Another daily news activity on the Learning Network site is Conversation Starters, which offers a set of questions and related article links to newsworthy and provocative stories from The New York Times. The service aims to help parents and children discuss current events in meaningful ways by posing open-ended questions related to the news. Another area of the Learning Network called Web Explorer takes students on guided tours of Web sites that address current events and issues, while text descriptions provide background information and questions to help guide students in exploring each site.
