Intel Provides New Web-Based Resources for Educators
Intel recently introduced three new additions to its collection of free Web-based resources
that function as part of the Intel Innovation in Education initiative, a program focused on developing tools designed to improve teaching in math, science and engineering. Designed by collaborating with educators and field-tested in classrooms, these free resources are available to teachers online at www.intel.com/education.
The first new educational offering is "Design and Discovery," which gives students aged 11 to 14 an introduction to engineering by incorporating a hands-on, inquiry-based experience that leads to the identification and design of solutions to problems. Students follow a design process that eventually leads to building working prototypes of their ideas, while teachers are given curriculum and additional resources for implementing the program. "Learning with Handhelds" specifies ways that handheld use can be incorporated into classroom learning. Teachers are able to acquire knowledge about how to use handhelds to assist in planning, organizing and record-keeping, while students can learn how to enter, manipulate and analyze data. Finally, "Intel Innovation in Education Institutes" are face-to-face educational workshops that follow the train-the-trainer model in which teachers are presented with new ideas and content, and then are prepared to deliver ongoing workshops as local offerings. The institutes are customizable in terms of workshop and presentation choices, as well as their length.
