Calif. Law Brings Remediation to Exit Exams

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Oct. 12 Assembly Bill 347, amending existing portions of the state's Education Code covering high school exit examinations. The new law addresses, among other things, the issue of remediation for students who are unable to pass the English and/or math portions of the exams. There are presently some 65,000 students in California from the classes of 2006 and 2007 who have met all other requirements for graduation but have not yet passed the exit exam, according to law firm Morrison & Foerster, which challenged the exit exam requirement in court last year....

2008 ExploraVision Science Awards Open

Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association have launched the 2008 ExploraVision Awards Program. The annual student science competition, now in its 16th year, is open to K-12 students in the United States and Canada, offering prizes of up to $10,000 in savings bonds for the winners....

California Schools To Optimize Networks

California is taking a novel approach to tackling the problem of network degradation in its schools and districts. The California K-12 High Speed Network, which administers the broadband network infrastructure for 81 percent of the state's schools, will be traveling around to individual schools and districts to analyze their network configurations, locate problems, and recommend fixes for optimizing performance. K12HSN is using Netcordia's NetMRI appliances to carry out the task....

Michigan Middle Schools Get $385,000 for Math Improvement

The DTE Energy Foundation recently awarded $385,000 in grants to 20 middle schools in Michigan for programs aimed at improving students' math skills. The individual grants ranged from $4,000 to $50,000 and are the first to be awarded under the foundation's Math Enrichment Grant Program....
