Financial Commitment Helps Save Decades-Old St. Louis Regional Science Fair

The Greater St. Louis Science Fair has received a commitment from semiconductor and solar technology solutions provider MEMC to support the endangered annual event over an unspecified multi-year period.

An initiative of the Academy of Science, and sponsored by MEMC and the Monsanto Fund, the Greater St. Louis Science Fair has a 60-year history of encouraging and recognizing scientific inquiry and creativity among more than 55,000 students in more than 230 public and private schools in the St. Louis area. Each year, participating schools select their top projects and submit them to the regional fair; the new commitment from MEMC will allow the STEM education tradition to continue.

"The timing is spectacular," said Mary Burke, executive director of the academy. "Abstracts for rigorous, authentic science were dropped off today for the February Honors Fair, and schools throughout the region have begun to sign-up online to send their top projects to the K-12 Fair this spring."

The 2011 fair, including project drop-off, demonstrations, displays, judging, and awards presentation, will be held May 4 through 8 at Queeny Park. For a complete schedule of events and deadlines, visit the fair schedule page. Further details about the fair, including registration information for schools and students, along with information on the virtual version of the fair (called "E-Fair") can be found here.
