Partnership Promises Enhanced Distance Learning

IXMICRO has teamed up with the University of Minnesota, providing a media server that allows real-time video transfer while developing a Web-based distance learning solution that will let students access class notes, reference materials and more through course-specific Web sites.

"Corporate and education partnerships like this are important," said Dr. Shih-Pau Yen, director of academic and distributed computer services at the University's Twin Cities campus. "Our joint development with IXMICRO combines their expertise in multimedia delivery systems with our ability to develop content."

IXMICRO's Media Server uses off-the-shelf PC technology such as Windows NT and supports MPEG, AVI and QuickTime video formats. The distance learning project is software-based and requires no special hardware, providing cross-platform support for Windows 95 and Macintosh. Students will be able to start, stop, pause and randomly access information. Two media players exist: a stand-alone player, and a Web-based player that plugs into a browser.
