Partnership for 21st Century Skills Calls for Innovative NCLB Reauthorization

The No Child Left Behind Act risks losing relevance if an innovative approach to reauthorization is not pursued, according to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. As Congress prepares to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), of which NCLB is the main component, the Partnership has provided federal policymakers with a “Statement of Principles” for infusing 21st century metrics into the act. The Partnership’s “Statement of Principles” calls for the integration of 21st century skills into NCLB standards, professional development, and assessment, as well as placing additional emphasis on information and communications technology literacy, and new 21st century content such as global awareness and financial and business literacy…

MySpace Launches Internet Safety Campaign With Guide for School Administrators

MySpace.com has launched an Internet safety campaign with the publication and distribution of parents’ and school administrators’ guides to Internet safety. The launch, a strategic partnership with Seventeen magazine, the National School Boards Association (NSBA), and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), supports the third annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month in October, a nationwide effort to educate Internet users about safe online practices. The School Administrators’ Guide to Internet Safety, which explains how MySpace works and addresses the various challenges that students and educators may face in relation to the Web site, is being distributed this month. MySpace will work with the NSBA to distribute the guide to approximately 55,000 public school administrators in grades 7-12. Illinois Governor, Board of Education Announce 1-to-1 Initiative

Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, and the Illinois State Board of Education recently announced the selection of seven school districts across Illinois to participate in the Technology Immersion Pilot Project. More than 1,700 students from these seven school districts will benefit from their own laptop computers as they learn in a 1-to-1 environment. The project’s $5 million in funding will assist school districts in immersing teachers, students, and administrators into a technology-rich environment known as a 1-to-1 learning environment. The unique element of a 1-to-1 environment is that a laptop computer is provided to each student, teacher, and relevant administrator so that teaching and learning can occur anytime, anywhere. The laptops will also help with science and math education. During the 2006-07 school year, laptops will be provided to 1,753 students. The seven participating school districts have all selected to target sixth-graders for the three-year initiative...

Alvarion Ltd., a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions and specialized mobile networks, is providing broadband to more than 200 locations, including all 197 schools, plus various administrative and other district offices, in Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL. Hillsborough County School District (HCSD) is one of the top 10 largest public school districts in the U.S. Following their contract award by the HCSD to provide broadband Internet services, company partner Sago Networks designed the countywide broadband wireless network using Alvarion’s BreezeACCESS VL operating in 5.3 and 5.8 GHz.
