U Michigan To Explore Link Between Pollution and K-12 Performance

Is there a link between air pollution and student performance in K-12 schools? That's what University of Michigan researchers said they hope to discover as they embark on a three-year research project to determine correlations between air quality and performance benchmarks like absenteeism, test scores, and dropout rates.

FIRST Pilots Restructured Student Robotics Competition in Michigan

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is piloting a new structure for its student robotics competition in Michigan. For the 2009 FIRST Robotics Competition, local competitions will be held in 16 districts leading up to the finals. FIRST said the new structure is designed to provide additional opportunities for students by creating additional competitions and making the competitions more accessible to a wider range of students.

Chicago District Rolls Out Differentiated Math Instruction to 44 Schools

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is ramping up its implementation of Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor, a research-based multimedia math curriculum. Through a deal announced this week, the district will provide the system to 25 high schools and 19 middle schools. Cognitive Tutor had previously been used in eight CPS schools.

Environmental Initiative Challenges K-12 Students To Develop Green Solutions

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has teamed up with Discovery and the Siemens Foundation to launch a new initiative called the "Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge." The initiative calls on K-12 students to develop green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities.

Alaska District Takes Independent Study Online

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District in Alaska is replacing its traditional independent study program with an online program offering more than 90 courses free to students enrolled in the district. Dubbed "Building Educational Success Together" (BEST), the program is aimed at advanced students, homeschooled students, students in need of credit recovery, and others who choose to learn in a non-traditional environment.
