SHCOE, K12 Partner for Online Career High School

Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE) will partner with online education and curriculum provider K12 to deliver career education online at the secondary level via the new Independence Career Online High School.

The online school will provide a high school diploma with 18 earned credits for students in addition to a credentialed career certificate. Four credits are required in career courses with the remaining credits in math; science; English; and social studies.

Up to 14 credits may be transferred.

Available career certificates will include: childcare; transportation services; office management; homeland security; protection services; and general career preparation.

The school provides support for students including:

  • An academic coach for one-on-one interaction;
  • Certified teaching staff;
  • Career mentoring and preparation; and
  • Technical support.

The target demographic for the new school will be adult students, and both companies in the partnership have experience in serving non-traditional student bodies.

In addition to serving more than 2,000 school districts in 33 states and delivering more than 4 million courses online worldwide, K12 provides curriculum options that are used in remediation, homeschooling, and various enrichment programs.

For its part, Pensacola, Florida-based SHCOE works with both teen and adult non-traditional students. The online school district holds AdvancED/SACS accreditation.

"SHCOE looks forward to becoming an integral part of K12's network," said Howard Liebman, CEO and superintendent of schools for SHCOE. "K12 is a leader in individualizing secondary online education and our strategic partnership with them represents a tremendous opportunity for both organizations. Independence Career Online High School will allow K12 to expand its private school offerings, while enabling both organizations to increase and enhance career education opportunities for adult students around the country.

"We're thrilled to partner with SHCOE to expand our private school offerings and provide a career-focused schooling option for adult students seeking their high school diploma," said Bruce Davis, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Business Development for K12. "We look forward to serving adult learners and helping them on their career path at Independence Career Online High School."
