STEAM Initiative for Brooklyn South Students Launches

Students engaging in HE³AT program

Technology incubator New Lab is working with the New York City Department of Education, Microsoft and the New York City Economic Development Corporation to foster the next generation of technology innovators. The new healthcare, energy, education, environment, and agriculture (HE³AT) Program gives Brooklyn South public high school students the opportunity to explore how technology impacts different industries through project-based learning.

For the 2019-2020 school year, 180 juniors and seniors from seven high schools will be participating in the STEAM initiative at New Lab's Navy Yard campus.  Each student team will tackle a project that deals with "unstructured problems that lack rules-based solutions."

Access and equity issues will be central components of each solution, and students will corporate design thinking and human-centered design principles into their projects.

Students will get mentors and guidance from New Lab member companies, including Farmshelf, 10xBeta, Blank Technologies, Terreform ONE, Voltaic and Shared_Studios.
