Discovery Education Acquires DoodleLearning, Will Integrate Doodle's Math and ELA Solutions

Discovery Education and parent company Clearlake Capital today announced the acquisition of British ed tech provider DoodleLearning, whose four math and English Language Arts solutions will be integrated into Discovery Education’s suite of solutions in the coming months, Discovery Education said.

United Kingdom-based DoodleLearning's products are built on “DoodleAdapt” technology, meaning as students work on their exercises, the platform recognizes where students need more practice and where they don’t, and then adjusts subsequent exercises accordingly, according to the DoodleLearning website. “By continually adapting to their level, Adapt sets work at just the right level for each pupil, letting them work independently and ensuring progression through the curriculum,” according to the website.

The acquisition supports Discovery Education’s mission to “prepare learners for tomorrow by creating innovative classrooms connected to today’s world,” and DoodleLearning’s products will complement Discovery Education’s K–12 learning platform as well as its other solutions, including Mystery Science, STEM Connect, and DE’s Math, Science, and Social Studies Techbooks, according to a news release. Doodle learning solutions have been used by over a million students in grades PreK–9 in the U.K. and around the world, the company said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

DoodleLearning’s co-founders, both former math teachers, will join the Discovery Education leadership team, a spokesman told THE Journal. DoodleLearning CEO Nicola Chilman will join Discovery Education’s senior leadership team led by UK/International Managing Director Howard Lewis, and DoodleLearning COO Tom Minor will help lead the Discovery Education integration efforts alongside the U.S. product team, said Senior Vice President, Global Communications Stephen Wakefield.

DoodleLearning’s four products come with thousands of ready-to-assign exercises and also allow teachers to import their own content and build their own exercises, according to its website. Doodle’s teacher hub shows visualizations of progress specific to each student, a small group, or entire class, the company said.

The acquired products that will be integrated with DE’s resources are:

  • DoodleMaths – confidence-building practice challenges from foundational math skills to integers and fractions, algebra, geometry, and the basics of statistics
  • DoodleTables – immersive, interactive multiplication tables for ages 4–14
  • DoodleEnglish – covers comprehension, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • DoodleSpell – uses interactive exercises to instill not only spelling skills but also word definitions and proper usage

“DoodleLearning is excited to join the Discovery Education team,” Minor said. “The company has laid out exciting plans to increase the number of instructional minutes it supports each day, and DoodleLearning is poised to play a significant role in this effort.”
