Discovery Education Acquires Science Experiment Platform Pivot Interactives

Discovery Education and its parent company Clearlake Capital Group today announced the acquisition of Minneapolis-based Pivot Interactives SBC, whose science experiment videos are used by about 1 million students, according to the companies.

Founded in 2012 with support from the National Science Foundation, Pivot Interactives develops cloud-based science activities and lab experiments that allow students to explore scientific phenomena without the requirement of costly lab equipment.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is the second this month by Discovery Education; two weeks ago the company added to its fold the U.K.-based digital math and ELA provider DoodleLearning.

Adding Pivot Interactives to its platform deepens Discovery Education’s science education content, which includes Mystery Science, the Science Techbook series, and STEM Connect, the company said.

“Unlike other digital interactives on the market, Pivot Interactives explores concepts using real-life experiments, not animations, allowing teachers to include phenomena-based learning at any stage of the learning cycle,” said Discovery Education Chief Executive Officer Scott Kinney.
