Anthropic Criticizes OpenAI Ad Strategy in Super Bowl Campaign

Anthropic recently launched a multi-million dollar Super Bowl advertising campaign criticizing OpenAI's decision to start showing ads within ChatGPT. The commercials feature scenarios where users seek advice from chatbots (clearly depicting ChatGPT), only to have the conversation twisted into product ads — including one for a fictitious cougar-dating site called Golden Encounters and another for height-boosting insoles. The commercials humorously portray manipulative chatbots as real people speaking in stilted, unnaturally effusive tones, forming relationships with users before hawking products.

Each commercial ends with the message "Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude," followed by the opening beat and lyrics of Dr. Dre's "What's the Difference."

Anthropic's Position

Anthropic stated that the personal nature of users' conversations with Claude would make ads feel "incongruous" and "in many cases, inappropriate." The company committed that its users won't see ads or sponsored links near their conversations, and Claude's answers won't be influenced by third-party product placements.

Sam Altman's Response

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with a lengthy social media post, calling the ads "dishonest" and eventually labeling Anthropic as "authoritarian." Altman insisted that OpenAI would "obviously never run ads in the way Anthropic depicts them" and that the company is "not stupid" and knows users would reject intrusive advertising.

Altman defended OpenAI's ad strategy by arguing that the point is to expand access to AI technology, stating, "Anthropic serves an expensive product to rich people," while OpenAI aims to "bring AI to billions of people who can't pay for subscriptions." He also claimed more Texans use ChatGPT for free than the total number of people using Claude in the U.S.

The Broader Context

The rivalry between the companies dates back to 2021, when siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, along with other former OpenAI employees quit OpenAI and formed Anthropic, promising a clearer focus on AI safety. OpenAI announced last month that ads within ChatGPT will be clearly labeled, appear at the bottom of responses, and won't influence the chatbot's answers.

The feud represents a fundamental difference in business models: Anthropic generates revenue through enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions, while OpenAI is introducing ads to support its massive infrastructure investments and free tier users.
