Instructure Expands Access to Mastery Predictive Assessments

Instructure, maker of the Canvas learning platform, has announced a national expansion of its Mastery Predictive Assessments. The standards-aligned assessments, already in use in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, will be available in 27 additional states in the 2026-2027 school year.

Mastery Predictive Assessments measure students' understanding of previously taught content throughout the school year and utilize that data to predict students' end-of-year performance, providing insight into which students are on track and which may need additional support. The assessments are "closely informed by each state's summative exam," Instructure said, to ensure alignment with local standards, rigor, and expectations. "This gives educators clear, trustworthy insights into which skills learners must master in their unique state context," the company added.

Instructure has backed its predictive model with multi-year, national research on predictive validity, the company said: "Mastery Predictive Assessments has demonstrated strong predictive validity and measurable impact on student achievement." For example, an ESSA Level III study  found that "districts using Predictive Assessments together with teacher and district-created assessments in Mastery have seen students gain up to 38 percentile points for every two assessments completed in Mastery," the company reported.
