Remove Complexity from K-12 Security and Data Protection

K–12 schools and districts face a growing cybersecurity challenge: defending increasingly complex digital environments with small IT teams, limited budgets, and expanding responsibilities. This report examines how lean technology teams can strengthen cyber resilience while reducing the operational burden of managing multiple security tools. Drawing on the experience of La Grange ISD, it explores risks ranging from phishing, ransomware, and account compromise to cloud and SaaS sprawl, student filter bypasses, and emerging shadow AI use.

The report highlights practical approaches including centralized visibility, automated monitoring, endpoint and email security, security awareness training, reliable backup and recovery, and integrated management. It also emphasizes an assume-breach mindset, comprehensive endpoint protection, and strong data governance as schools adopt AI. By simplifying security operations and improving visibility, resource-constrained districts can respond faster, protect sensitive data, and build a more sustainable security posture.
