UCLA Extension Offers Flexible Online Courses

Thanks to a unique collaboration between the University of California at Los Angeles Extension and The Home Education Network (THEN), teachers throughout California can take courses online from home, whenever their schedules permit.

The online curriculum includes the CLAD (Cross-Cultural Language and Development) Program, required in many districts throughout the state. The courses involve lectures, assignments and discussions; a virtual lounge lets distant participants share what they've learned.

Online courses are limited to 20 students, who access assignments through secured network software. Besides CLAD, this summer's courses covered cultural diversity in the classroom, language development and usage, and specially designed academic instruction in English (SDAIE).

Since September 1996, over 500 people from 38 states and seven countries have enrolled in UCLA Extension online courses. "We are now able to give teachers what they try to give their students -- individualized instruction, hands-on experience and lots of interactivity," said John Kobara, president and CEO of THEN.
