Learnosity Integrates MyScript for Handwritten Math Assessments

Learnosity has integrated handwriting recognition technology from MyScript, which recognizes more than 200 mathematical characters and symbols, to its new suite of assessment tools to allow students to write and solve equations with handwritten input.

As a result of the integration, students will now have the option to enter numbers and symbols by drawing by hand, or through the customized Learnosity keyboard. "The handwritten input is automatically converted into a digital format," according to a news release. "The student responses are then scored by Learnosity's rule-based auto grading math engine MathCore, which evaluates the mathematical correctness of a response regardless of its form."

"Handwriting recognition technology allows students to write naturally as they would on paper while taking advantage of today's digital learning tools," said Jean-Marc Aichoun, executive vice president of sales and marketing at MyScript, in a prepared statement. "Our partnership with Learnosity demonstrates the benefits of handwritten inputs for math education and assessment and how this technology can be leveraged to enhance the student learning experience."

"Traditional keyboards do not have the majority of required math equation symbols readily available to users," said Gavin Cooney, CEO of Learnosity, in a news release. "The increasing prevalence of touchscreen devices allows us to further optimize the educational experience by enabling our math questions with MyScript handwriting recognition technology. Through the partnership, we are able to maximize our users' experiences, by increasing both the ease and effectiveness of our applications."
