Microsoft's Bookshelf 98, while being updated and refined, remains one of the best tools available for students and teachers alike. The software's QuickShelf information retrieval tool has been completely redesigned, featuring an icon in the system tray that provides instant access to Bookshelf 98 without leaving an application. Another revised feature is the product's Web search capability. The new Premier Web Search automatically searches through 400,000 Web sites editorially selected by Bookshelf and Infoseek, and provides even more Web searching options.
Responding to requests from users, Microsoft has also included QuickFootnote, a feature that automatically creates a footnote and adds the supporting citation to a user's document in Microsoft Word or Works. And, parental control is now available, letting parents and teachers block access to articles and words in Bookshelf they consider inappropriate for young children.
