E-Grant Application Process Established

EDUCAUSE, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Federal Public Key Infrastructure Steering Committee have formed a digital infrastructure that enables colleges and universities to apply electronically for grants.

Colleges and universities use Digital Signature Trust's TrustID digital certificates as signatures in applying electronically for NIH grants. The applications are then submitted to NIH through a system of security "bridges" where the digital signature in each application is checked for a TrustID digital certificate. The groups involved in creating the infrastructure say three higher education institutions so far have successfully submitted electronic grant applications to NIH through the use of TrustID and this infrastructure.
