Skyline Uses Soliloquy for ELL

01.12.2007—At the start of the 2006 school year, Skyline Elementary, Cape Coral, Fla., enrolled a dramatically increased number of English language learners (ELL)—nearly double that of the previous year, from 23 percent to 41 percent. So, in an effort to help improve reading fluency, the pre K-12 school turned to Soliloquy Learning's Soliloquy Reading Assistant.
Reading Assistant is a tool that delivers reading instruction and helps develop reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills in ELL students. With Reading Assistant, students read e-books into a computer using a headset and microphone. The software, which incorporates speech recognition, listens to the students and corrects mistakes on the part of the readers and speaks the word. It also makes records of sessions for review by teachers later, and it provides definitions for individual words when requested by the student.
"The teachers of our second, third, fourth and fifth graders, who are all using Soliloquy Reading Assistant, love the way the program delivered a patient guided oral reader for each student," said Judith Gault, reading coach at Skyline Elementary, in a prepared statement. "The children are getting the one on one support they need to strengthen their reading fluency skills, and the teachers are easily able to integrate Soliloquy Reading Assistant time into their regular classroom activities."
Skyline's reading curriculum also includes Harcourt's Trophies Reading Program and Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader. The school, part of the Lee County School District, is now using Soliloquy Reading Assistant with some 800 students.
