The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation has awarded $8.3 million to two districts in the United States--Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia and Long Beach Unified School District in California--and to the University of Illinois at Chicago as part of an effort to deliver training and professional development to school principals.

The grant monies will be used to fund principal preparation and training programs over the next three years for 150 school principals. University of Illinois at Chicago, which will receive $2.1 million over three years, will work with Chicago Public Schools through its Urban Education Leadership Program, which aims to place doctoral candidates into leadership positions in the district. According to the foundation, over the last three years, "more than half of the district’s 650 principals have been replaced, and a number of the remaining principals will be eligible for retirement in the next three years."

Gwinnett County Public Schools will receive $3.5 million for its "Quality-Plus Leader Program," which provides a year of training to principal candidates, including curriculum, assessment and instruction, budgeting and finance, operations management, and community relations. Gwinnett serves about 154,000 students in 111 schools.

And, finally, Long Beach Unified School District will receive $2.7 million for its "Aspiring Principal Apprentice Cohort Program." The grant, according to the Broad Foundation, "will fund the training of 50 principals in three cohorts of this program, which will expand a current pilot program in the district to broaden the recruitment, selection, and placement of principals and will add a year-long apprenticeship for candidates. LBUSD serves about 90,000 students in 95 schools.
