Sony has introduced a new model in its lineup of LCD-based network projectors for education, the VPL-FW41, a high-light-output model designed for fixed installations.

The new VPL-FW41 offers a brightness of 4,500 lumens (3,600 in economy mode), a resolution of 1,280 x 800 (WXGA), and a contrast ratio of 700:1. It supports screens as large as 600 inches (diagonal). Other features include:

  • 12-bit gamma correction with 3D digital comb filter (for uniform picture and greater detail);
  • 12 µm cell gaps (about 12-thousandths of a millimeter);
  • BrightEra technology that uses an inorganic alignment layer to allow for higher light output without damaging the LCD panels;
  • Support for centralized control and monitoring via network;
  • Support for switching between computers on the LAN, including wirelessly connected computers;
  • Power zoom, focus and horizontal/vertical shift functions;
  • Two 1.8 watt speakers; and
  • ±30 degree vertical keystone correction.

Video connectivity includes HDMI, component (five BNC connectors), two mini D-Sub 15-pin RGB ports, S-video, and composite video. Other inputs include RJ-45 (100BASE-TX/10BASE-T); RGB monitor out (mini D-Sub 15-pin); stereo minijack; RS-232C and stereo minijack for controls.

The VPL-FW41 weighs in at about 21 pounds and measures 21" x 5.75" x 13.875".

The new projector is available in two configurations. The VPL-FW41, which includes a standard power lens, sells for $6,710. The VPL-FW41L, which does not come with a lens but offers four lens options, sells for $6,440. Both models are available now.
