Cisco to Award $500,000 in Grants

The second annual Virtual Schoolhouse Grant Program will award $500,000 worth of networking products, services and training to 50 K-12 schools that develop and articulate a technology plan that integrates the Internet into their classrooms.

Selected schools will receive equipment and services valued at about $10,000, depending on their specific needs. The firm will award routers, switches and Cisco Internetwork Operating System software, plus Smartnet packages good for training and one year of maintenance support.

Grants are to be used for curriculum-based applications. One of last year's recipients, Homer Junior High School in Homer, Alaska, created a scholastic Web site that lets students work on projects from home.

Winners for 1997 will be announced on June 30 at the National Education Computing Conference (NECC) in Seattle, Wash.

To receive an application, call the education hotline at (408) 526-4226 or e-mail to [email protected]. The deadline is March 1, 1997. Cisco Systems, San Jose, CA, (800) 800-1180, www.cisco.com/edu
