PC Companion Weighs Under One Pound

Under 16 oz., the Compaq PC Companion lets one exchange critical information with Windows-based desktop and notebook computers. The pocket-sized unit supports the Microsoft Windows CE operating system -- an open, standards-based, scalable platform.

Compaq PC Companion allows users to perform such everyday activities as calendar synchronization and Internet access. Mail on the Run (River Run Software), for example, provides direct and remote access to Microsoft Mail, Lotus cc:Mail and other popular e-mail systems.

A backlit display permits excellent resolution, with four levels of gray. One can navigate through the Windows environment with a stylus or by simply touching the screen. The unit connects to a PC via its infrared port or a serial cable. Also included, DataViz Desktop To Go adds the capability to synchronize, import and convert files with numerous software applications.

Plus, Compaq has partnered with a variety of independent vendors to develop customized computing solutions. For those on the go, SkyTel offers two-way wireless messaging services as an option; by connecting the unit to a pager, one can create, send, receive, reply to, file and forward text messages to and from Internet e-mail addresses.

Compaq PC Companions have models 2MB or 4MB of RAM; a 2MB add-on memory module is available. Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, TX, (800) OK-COMPAQ, www.compaq.com.
