School District Signs Up for Video Distribution

Cobb County School District in Georgia has signed a contract with Convergent Media Systems for installation of a video distribution system at 89 of its schools. The one-year contract will include help-desk support and maintenance services.

"The systems we're installing will provide students and teachers with full-time classroom access to 12 channels of programming," says Bill Taylor, education account manager for Convergent. Seven of the 12 channels are dedicated to cable programming such as The Discovery Channel, The History Channel and The Learning Channel. Two other channels carry Georgia Public TV and the PeachStar network and three channels are reserved for local students and teachers to create programming, use as a bulletin board, and for remote productions from within the school (like live performing arts broadcasts).

Dr. Jerry Sparks, Cobb County's TV/video distribution project manager, notes that "by bringing these technologies into our schools, students and teachers will benefit from improved access to instructional TV programming from satellite, cable and local productions."
