Fremont Bolsters Web Security with Blue Coat Appliance

##AUTHORSPLIT##<--->

As part of its 2007-2008 technology goals, Fremont School District in California had deployed appliances from Blue Coat Systems to improve Web security and reduce bandwidth consumption. The district is also using the Blue Coat ProxySG appliances to provide Web security and policy control across its Internet gateway.

The district is using the technology to accelerate its Web applications, including supplemental educational tools that are being used in conjunction with textbooks at its junior highs and high schools, run applications supporting its elementary school math and reading curricula, and distribute streaming media. According to Blue Coat, so far the district has seen "a 2,000 percent increase in Web performance and significant reduction in bandwidth [consumption]."

"We needed to propel our network into the future to accommodate our ever-expanding usage and more Web-based and multimedia applications," said David Hotchkiss, CIO for Fremont USD. "At the same time, we wanted to ensure high levels of Web security and policy control to protect students and resources. Blue Coat provided a solution that accomplishes both of these goals."

Fremont Unified School District, Fremont, CA, operates 29 elementary schools, five junior highs, and six high schools, in addition to 10 other educational centers. It serves 32,000 students.
