Trussville City Schools Regains Control of Its Network
If you were designing a new school district network, what forms of
security would you implement? That was the challenge faced by Shawn
Nutting, director of technology for Trussville City Schools in
Alabama. On July 1 three years ago, Trussville became an independent
school district when it broke off from the considerably larger
Jefferson County School System in Birmingham, AL.

Arkansas District Deploys AVG for Network Protection
Arkadelphia Public Schools in Arkansas has switched to AVG Anti-Virus--
with the help of value-added technology distributor, Walling Data
Systems--to secure the district's network of more than 700 workstations.

Genetec Releases New Version of IP Access Control
Genetec has released version 2.0 of its IP access control security
application, Synergis. The program provides a unified security console
through two modules. SecurityDesk allows the user to control and
monitor the security system by consolidating video, audio, and access
control data into one interface. ConfigTool is an interface for
managing users, cardholders, access credentials, schedules, and
hardware devices. It also provides reporting capabilities.

PIER Updates Collaboration System for Emergency Response
PIER Systems has launched version 6.0 of the PIER--Public Information
Emergency Response--system. The intent of the PIER program is to allow
public affairs staff to draft, edit, and send out a message to
multiple audiences directly, without having to go through conventional
mass communication channels. PIER also allows users to send out
notifications such as SMS text messages, manage public inquiries and
respond to media effectively.

$96,000 System Checks for Sex Offenders at New Orleans Schools
After a two-year pilot, schools in the St. Tammany Parish Public
Schools in New Orleans will be implementing new visitor ID scanners to
check visitors against the National Registry of Sex Offenders. The
system, put together by ID Group in Jackson, MS, includes scanners,
software, printers, and badges. It cost $96,000 and will cover 52
schools.

Microsoft To Expand Security Lifecycle Expertise
Microsoft is crossing the aisles to see the security process through
from start to finish--not just internally, but for outside software
developers too. The company plans to export its Security Development
Lifecycle (SDL) process to a greater extent by releasing tools and
support to IT pros later this fall, Redmond said last week.
