NCLB: AYP 'Balloon Payment' Coming Due, Say Researchers

California may be in for a(nother) shock to its education system: According researchers, virtually every elementary school in the state will fail to meet NCLB adequate yearly progress goals by 2014. And the same fate may await other states that have adopted similar approaches to AYP: setting low initial goals and ramping them up steeply to meet full proficiency by 2014.

Lee County Ramps Up Energy Efficiency in 25 Schools

The School District of Lee County in Florida is expanding an energy conservation program it launched in 2006. The district has contracted with FPL Services to implement the second phase of the program, in which 25 new schools will be overhauled to reduce energy and water consumption.

NSBA Names '20 To Watch' in Ed Tech, Lands Pew Grant for PreK Action Program

Who are the emerging role models for education technology leadership? The National School Boards Association released its annual list of 20 candidates this week, a list that recognizes teachers, technology directors, CIOs, librarians, and others who have demonstrated innovation in K-12 technology to make a positive impact on students and teachers. NSBA also announced that it's received a grant to support its efforts in preK education awareness.

Northern California School To Host 412 Kilowatt Solar Energy System

San Domenico School, a preK-12 Catholic school in Northern California, announced plans this week to install a 412 kilowatt solar energy system on its campus, a move that is expected to offset about 85 percent of the school's electricity costs an cut carbon emissions by about 860,000 pounds each year.

Danville School Joins Growing List of Institutions Going Solar

The Athenian School in Danville, CA has announced plans to implement a new 220-kilowatt photovoltaic system, projected to supply roughly half the school's annual energy needs.

Voyager Expands K-6 Teacher Professional Development Program

Voyager Expanded Learning recently announced an update to its VoyagerU Professional Development Program, which is aimed at K-6 teachers. The newly expanded program includes four additional courses, all focused on reading instruction.

Mercy High School Deploys Cymphonix Network Composer To Manage Use, Maintain Costs

Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, MI has selected Cymphonix Network Composer DC30X to help manage content filtering and Internet use reporting throughout the campus. The deployment has also helped the school streamline its network usage and maintain its current infrastructure expense, in spite of increasing its user population.

Half of Alabama Middle and High Schools Adopt Lit Program

Glencoe/McGraw-Hill has announced the company’s reading and language arts programs are being adopted in Alabama by more than 50 percent of the state’s middle and high schools for use in the 2008-2009 school year.
