Desire2Learn Gets IMS Common Cartridge 1.0 Certified
Desire2Learn this week announced that its Desire2Learn Learning Environment has been certified by the IMS Global Learning Consortium to comply with the IMS Common Cartridge Standard 1.0.
Common Cartridge is an open standard designed to make a wider range of content available through educational tools like learning management systems, allowing content to be mixed and matched and to reduce production and testing costs associated with content development and deployment. Participants in the alliance include Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Wimba, Moodle, Microsoft, Jenzabar, and several other vendors and developers.
"Leading institutions, systems and virtual schools are eager to realize the benefits of Common Cartridge in enabling a new era of digital learning content," said Rob Abel, chief executive officer of the IMS Global Learning Consortium, in a statement released Monday. "By achieving official conformance from IMS, Desire2Learn is showing strong leadership in making these benefits available to their customers, including the groundbreaking Digital Learning Connection program."
"We are very excited about attaining Common Cartridge compliance with our latest product version which builds upon the support begun with the Desire2Learn Learning Environment 8.4" said Jeremy Auger, Desire2Learn chief operating officer and board member, also in a prepared statement. "Our Common Cartridge certification positions us well with publishers looking to implement the standard, and enables us to demonstrate and work with early adopters. We have indicated our support for the Common Cartridge standard from the outset and remain committed to not only meeting client needs for interoperability but to also taking a leadership position."
