Scientific Learning Launches Reading Resources Site

Educational software creator Scientific Learning has unveiled a Web site that provides resources to help teachers and parents teach reading literacy and comprehension in grades K-12. ReadingAssistant.com, available now, provides a variety of tools including whitepapers, webinars, and blog posts.

Reading Assistant is a supplemental online reading program for beginning readers, English language learners, and struggling readers designed to correct students in real time as they read passages out loud. It automatically calculates the number of correct words per minute and creates comprehension and vocabulary reports. Reading Assistant uses passages from a variety of topics and reading levels, and provides visual and pronunciation hints if the student is having difficulty.

Other features of Reading Assistant include:

  • Upwards of 300 Common Core-aligned reading titles including a variety of subjects such as science, social studies, and history;
  • Quizzes; and
  • Reports for the student, group, and district levels, including graphics that reflect student proficiency level, reading level trends, usage, and performance.

The site also includes information about Scientific Learning's Reading Assistant speech-recognition technology, designed for students in grades K-12, and sample content from its teacher guides.

To kick off the Web site's launch, ReadingAssistant.com is including a webinar and whitepaper focusing on "the role of reading fluency in comprehension," created by Timothy Rasinski, professor of literacy education and director of the reading clinic at Kent State University in Ohio.
