Edmodo Releases Free Snapshot Formative Assessment Tool

Edmodo, which operates the popular education social networking site of the same name, has released a new formative assessment tool called Snapshot, which is "designed to provide real-time insight into student proficiency in educational standards and help teachers immediately address any learning gaps."

Snapshot is built into the Edmodo social platform and comes in versions for teachers and administrators. The free tool supports Common Core and various state standards. Other features include:

  • Quiz assignments before and after lessons;
  • Visuals to show student progress; and
  • A recommendation engine that provides resources for addressing students' knowledge gaps.

Edmodo is also releasing Snapshot for Schools, a premium version of the service for school and district administrators that's designed to provide insight into "progress on educational standards in real time at the school and district level," according to Edmodo.

"Teachers are always pressed for time, but we still want feedback on our students' progress," said Kate Baker, high school English teacher at Southern Regional High in New Jersey, in a statement released to coincide with the announcement. "The fact that Snapshot creates the questions, manages the choices, and reports the results by standard directly in the platform – and does this for free – is such an amazing tool that enhances an already versatile platform."

Early adopters of Snapshot for Schools for also have early access to Edmodo Practice, a forthcoming release that Edmodo promised will deliver "standards-aligned content through an engaging interface where students select an interactive learning style."

The new software is being shown off at the ISTE 2014 conference, taking place this week in Atlanta. Edmodo is exhibiting in booth 800. Additional details can be found at edmodo.com.
