Hewlett Packard's DeskJet 840C/842C

Hewlett Packard’s low-cost DeskJet 840C/842C color inkjet printer provides photo-quality printing and the fastest print speeds offered by HP. Everything from photos to class projects can be printed out with speed (8 ppm in black and up to 5 ppm in color) and quality. Priced at only $149, it is also very affordable.

The printer features HP’s PhotoREt II color layering technology. This blends tiny drops of ink to produce a broad range of realistic colors. By employing a new tri-color inkjet print cartridge, the HP No. 17, the printer delivers a cost per page that is competitive with sub-$100 inkjet printers on the market. It also delivers crisp, laser-quality black printing from the HP No. 15 black print cartridge.

Also featured is HP ColorSmart III, a technology that can intelligently analyze documents and apply special image-processing algorithms to optimize color-output quality and performance. One facet of this technology is SmartFocus, a set of proprietary software algorithms that automatically enhance image quality and clarity. With the use of this feature, low-resolution images printed from the Internet are sharpened by synthesizing a higher-resolution image. Hewlett Packard Co., Palo Alto, CA, (800) 752-0900, www.hp.com.
