Texas District Takes Special Ed Management Online

Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) in Texas is moving management of its special populations to the Web. The district last week signed on with Spectrum K12 School Solutions' Encore system for the move, which will cut roughly in half the number of data entry assistants required to assist with paperwork, moving those assistants into positions where they will be working directly with students, according to RRISD Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Toni Garcia.
"Our district's goal is to move to a more technology driven philosophy, so, with this new philosophy in sight, we researched computerized special education programs that would meet our district's needs and leave behind our old way of completing [individualized education plans] by hand," said Linda Noy, director of special education for RRISD. "We also wanted a system that would be easily accessible to our teachers and that would reduce the time they spent on paperwork and [individualized education plan] meetings while increasing their time in the classroom."
The new Web-based system will also align with the district's reporting system (PEIMS) and comply with standards using the its built-in compliance check.
Round Rock Independent School District serves some 39,000 students in 27 elementary schools, eight middle schools, and four high schools, as well as three alternative learning centers.
