Akitio Releases Bus-Powered 512 GB Thunderbolt SSD

Storage manufacturer Akitio has shipped a dual-interface storage system that supports both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt and has begun shipping a fully bus-powered, external 512 GB solid state Thunderbolt storage system.

According to the company, the 512 GB Neutrino Thunderbolt Edition is able to hit data transfer speeds of 10 Gbps on bus power alone. The 512 GB model, which supports Windows and Mac devices with a Thunderbolt port, runs $599 and is available in limited quantities right now. It's also widely available in 120 GB and 256 GB configurations.

Akitio has also introduced the Neutrino Thunder D3, a dual-interface storage system that supports both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. The device can hold either two 2.5-inch SATA hard drives or two SSDs for up to 4 TB of total storage and offers 10 Gbps data transfer speeds using the Thunderbolt interface or 5 Gbps using USB 3.0. The enclosure alone runs about $279.
