Google Adds AI Video Creator to Workspace Labs

Google has added a new AI-powered video creation service as part of its Workspace Labs program, where users can try out new AI features.

The cloud giant said the workplace-oriented Google Vids helps users create, write, produce, edit, collaborate, and share videos.

"Vids is an AI-powered video creation app that's designed for work and deeply integrated with the Workspace suite you use every day," Google said in a July 15 e-mail to members of Workspace Labs, an invite-only program where users can experiment with new AI-powered features in wares ranging from Google Docs to Gmail.

"Build your narrative with high quality templates or use Gemini in Vids to help you get to a first draft faster," the e-mail said. "Unleash your creativity with our royalty-free stock content library and land your message with Vids recording studio — all without ever leaving Workspace." Formerly called G Suite, Workspace is the company's cloud-based suite of productivity and collaboration tools.

Teased back in April, the new entry into one of the hottest areas of AI development follows products like the Sora text-to-video generator from OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) and others including DeepBrain AI, Invideo AI, Descript, and many more.

The help center explains the tool comes with "help me create" functionality to guide new users into their first draft video from prompts they write with Google's Gemini AI system. The prompts can help Gemini to:

  • Generate:
    • An editable outline storyboard.
    • Suggested scenes with suggested text.
    • Script narrative for videos and voice overs.
  • Select:
    • Suggested stock video or images, which can be kept or swapped with your media.
    • Suggested accompanying stock music, which can be kept or swapped with your media.

Google cautions that advanced tech like "help me create" is rolled out gradually so might not be available to everyone at the same time.

Full functionality includes:

Along with being part of the Workspace Labs program, users must also have access to Gemini Alpha.

Browser support includes Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge (Windows only).
