Gateway Inks $2.2 MM Deal with Illinois Board of Education

12.11.2006—Gateway Inc., Irvine, Calif., announced that it has signed a deal with the Illinois State Board of Education. Gateway will supply its convertible notebooks to five Illinois school districts, along with support services, for a pilot "technology immersion" project.

According to Gateway, the project will use the company's M285 convertible notebook PCs. The M285 is a notebook that can convert into a tablet-style PC by swiveling and folding the display, allowing students to take notes and draw diagrams in a classroom environment using a tablet pen. The devices will be given to teachers and sixth graders "for use as a teaching tool to support day to day instruction and student testing."

Gateway signed a similar deal last month with the United Independent School District in Texas to supply more than 1,000 M280 Convertible Notebooks to the district, as well as various services.

Illinois' Technology Immersion Pilot Project is a joint effort between Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn's office and the Illinois State Board of Education, providing students with the laptops equipped with science and math tutorials, as well as word processing and spreadsheet software. Educators in the program receive professional development training, and schools receive "technical assistance to aid in developing a school-based laptop network."
