Baltimore City PSS Receives WhisperPhones
01.02.2007—The Baltimore City Public School System will receive 1,500 WhisperPhones in a donation from manufacturer Harebrain Inc., in partnership with Progressus Therapy. The donation is valued at $15,000.
Harebrain's WhisperPhones are audio amplification devices used to help develop phonemic awareness. The WhisperPhones are large headsets that can be operated hands-free. They amplify a student's voice and convey it to one ear. The devices are reversible, battery-free and dishwasher-safe, according to the company.
The deal came about through a partnership between Harebrain and Progressus Therapy, an organization that has worked with the Baltimore City Public School System on a language-based reading intervention program at West Baltimore Middle School. Progressus Therapy is owned by Educate Inc., which also owns Sylvan Learning Centers, Hooked on Phonics and Education Station. The company recruits and places speech language professionals, operational therapists and physical therapists in schools and various state and local programs.
