Dell, HP Top U.S. PC Shipments in Fourth Quarter

Dell and HP topped the list of vendors in shipments of personal computers in the United States in the fourth quarter, according to a preliminary report by technology research firm Gartner Inc. Apple, Toshiba and HP all showed the strongest growth for the quarter in the list of the top-5 vendors.Overall, according to Gartner, shipments of PCs in the United States dropped in the fourth quarter by 3.2 percent, down to roughly 16 million units. And, of the top-5 vendors, Dell dropped most, down 17.3 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Nevertheless, Dell maintained its market share leadership, accounting for 29.1 percent of all PCs shipping in the United States during the quarter (including desktops, laptops and servers). For the quarter, Dell shipped a total of 4.65 million units in the United States; HP shipped 4.05 million; Gateway shipped 1.13 million; Toshiba shipped 852,000; and, rounding out the top-5, Apple shipped 808,000....
