Pennsylvania DOE Adopts Real-Time Collaboration Tools

2/21/2007—The Pennsylvania Department of Education will implement new real-time collaboration capabilities using LiveAccess from Vemics Inc., a developer of collaboration and learning tools. Live Access combines multipoint video, voice, and data technologies with content, consulting, and customer support.

The new initiative will target students, teachers, and administrators, enabling meetings, teacher training, and distance learning across the state. The technology will also be used to provide training to families of special-needs students and to create an "online communications solution to support the state's emergency readiness."

LiveAccess will be used by the Pennsylvania DOE, the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units, and the Pennsylvania Training the Technical Assistance Network to bring "top teachers to students who otherwise would not have access to these teachers due to personnel shortages or distances," according to Vemics.

Directors of the Intermediate Unit will be able to reduce travel across the state using the real-time online video conferencing program. Vemics also said the technology "is also expected to be utilized to help connect teacher representatives and principals for participation in virtual state board meetings."
