Kansas Launches Tuition-Free Online Public High School

Kansas' Spring Hill Unified School District #230 has teamed up with Insight Schools to launch a new online virtual public high school that's being offered tuition-free to students throughout the state. The new virtual school, dubbed Insight School of Kansas, will launch its first semester in August, with course selection taking place this spring.

Insight School of Kansas is targeted toward students who are homeschooled or have barriers to attending physical school, such as those live in remote areas or have disabilities. It's also aimed at those looking to fast track courses or make up for lost credits.

The school is offering more than 120 courses online initially, from remedial t AP-level courses. It's also offering an "iMentor" program, 24-hour support, tools for parents, and various interactive features for students to chat, meet, and otherwise socialize online and in person. (In person activities include traditional field trips and school dances.)

For those participating, the school will provide laptops and partial reimbursement for Internet-related expenses incurred by students. All students must attend full-time (five courses) except those living within Spring Hill Unified School District, who can attend part-time. Students can join starting in grade 9 and as late as grade 12, though they must complete at least five credits to receive a diploma from the school.
