South Carolina District Blankets 50 Campuses with WiFi

South Carolina's Horry County Schools is rolling out WiFi across 50 campuses in an effort to boost student learning opportunities.

The rollout, when completed, will include 3,600 individual wireless access points spread out around the district's 50 schools and centers. For the deployment, the school went with a controller-free WLAN solution from Aerohive Networks, one that, according to the manufacturer, would provide the school with "ease-of-expansion, high-redundancy, and centralized management."

"Wireless is a critical component to the learning experience we provide to our students," said Mike Cherry, program specialist-network services at Horry County Schools, in a prepared statement. "Aerohive's innovative, controller-less WLAN solution far exceeded our expectations in terms of coverage, performance, ease of use and reliability. Because we don't have to deploy a controller at each school, our capital expense, as well as ongoing costs, are significantly less than the other products we evaluated."

Horry County Schools, the third-largest K-12 district in South Carolina, serves about 38,000 students in 26 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and nine high schools, as well as five other campuses.
