Navasota ISD Selects Career Readiness Program To Prepare Students for College, Work

Texas-based Navasota Independent School District will implement a district-wide, Web-based program that provides middle and high school students with workplace and college readiness skills training.
For the project, the district chose WIN Learning's Personalized Career Readiness System. Based on WIN's Educonomy Model, the program provides students with tools to analyze labor market trends, participate in skill assessments that measure individual career readiness and skill development, and participate in a contextual learning program.
To help students choose their potential post-high school career path or fields of study, they can first access WIN Strategic Compass, which provides current and projected real-time labor market information about specific career paths and occupations. Students can learn about different fields of interest or research a particular industry's wages, job demand, employer need, and what skills or educational requirements are needed.
Once students have a better understanding of their interests, WIN's Initial Skills Review provides a series of tests that assess student career readiness and highlight any gaps in skill development that should be addressed. After assessment, students can begin a program of customized study. Aligned to state standards and national proficiency tests, WIN's Career Readiness courseware allows students to work at their own pace, receiving constant feedback as they prepare for exams and learn foundational career skills.
The system also includes WIN's Soft Skills Series, a program designed to help students build important non-academic soft skills, such as acting professionally, effectively communicating, teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Career and Technology Education Program students in the Navasota ISD will begin the Initial Skills Review this fall. In 2014, all middle and high school students will begin using the Career Readiness and Soft Skills courseware to advance basic workplace and college readiness skills.
The Navasota Independent School District is a public school district covering 360 square miles in the southern part of Grimes and Brazos counties. Approximately 3,000 students from the city of Navasota and the rural communities of Millican, Courtney, White Hall, Stoneham, Plantersville, and Todd Mission are enrolled in the district's one high school, one middle school, one intermediate school, and two elementary schools. The Navasota ISD has an operating budget of approximately $1.5 million.
