Texas District Hosting 'When I Grow Up' Career Expo

A Texas district is hosting a career expo to allow students of all ages to talk with people in various careers, including regional employers. Houston Independent School District will host the "When I Grow Up" career expo on Mar. 23 and expects 100 exhibitors to be on hand from local companies.

Besides getting the chance to learn about future careers, students will also participate in various competitions as part of learning about cosmetology, movie making, construction and culinary skills. Companies will also provide short workshops.

High school and college-age students will also be able to apply and interview on the spot for summer jobs at companies that participate in Hire Houston Youth. This initiative, begun in 2016, offers students a minimum of $8 per hour for eight weeks of paid work at the City of Houston and in the city's nonprofit, community and private sectors. For students without access to their own transportation, the city's bus operation provides free metro service during the time the student is employed.
