Discovery Education Launches Minecraft: Education Edition Channel

Discovery Education recently unveiled a new Minecraft: Education Edition channel within its learning platform, which means that the wildly popular educational game is now supported within DE’s platform with instructional resources for using M:EE in the classroom, the companies said.

Easier access for educators was one of the drivers behind the new partnership with Discovery Education, Head of Minecraft: Education Edition Allison Matthews told THE Journal in a recent interview.

The Minecraft Mentor and Educator Behind the Most Popular Game in the World

Felisa Ford is not a gamer, and she understands parent and teacher skepticism when they hear the word gamification. Her persistence and creative methods are paying off, both across her district and globally, through a Minecraft Student Ambassador Program she created and through a new collection of games she helped create focusing on equity, diversity, and social justice. “The collaboration with Discovery Education has been in the works for quite some time now, and it's wonderful to see it come to life,” she said. “There are so many educators who already have their practice established in their classroom, and it's often really challenging for them to add another entry point to content into their practice when they've got so much that they need to do already. So through the Discovery Education collaboration, we're providing them exposure to the sorts of lessons that we have available in Minecraft: Education Edition, in a way that's very accessible to educators already using the Discovery Education platform.”

The M:EE partnership with Discovery Education means that educators on the platform can easily access related lesson plans and ready-to-assign student activities to use alongside the hundreds of available Minecraft games in subject areas such as math, SEL, coding, language arts, history and science.

Students can use the Discovery Education content creation tool to take notes on their Minecraft progress and show their class or their teacher what they learned and achieved within each Minecraft game or lesson. Additionally, the Discovery Education platform’s accessibility tools also make it easy for special-needs students to participate in the Minecraft games.

The Minecraft: Education Edition Channel is available within the Discovery Education platform now, the companies said.
